Unit 4 Blog

Hello Everyone,
My experience with the Loving Kindness mental workout was very difficult and frustrating at first because I wanted to grasp the feelings and emotions that were described by the speaker. As I moved forward with the loving kindness mental workout I did find it easier to focus and breath in during the times of thought about family members and loved ones. I found that I related better with the mental workout with people other than myself that I loved and that was very beneficial to me in my loving kindness and mental growth. This mental workout was very difficult to me so recommending this one to others would prove hypocritical but I would not oppose anyone who wants to try it on their own volition.

I believe the concept of "mental workouts" are to help build and strengthen the brain much like physical exercise to the body through mental stimulation. Mental workouts help create brilliant and transcendent thought processes that would not normally happen because of remaining complacent and stagnant in our mental growth. I do believe by implementing mental workouts during times of stress, frustration, struggle, or loneliness that maturation will occur within our psychological health.

  1. I agree with your concept of mental workouts in that they are exercises for the brain much like exercise for the body. I have heard that keeping the mind active on a daily basis can reduce the risk of Alzheimer’s. I am not sure if there are concrete studies that have been done on this, but from what we have learned so far this would make sense. Not only does working our minds keep them strong, it would seem that regularly working the mind improves our focus and feelings of well-being. On a personal note, having regular mental workouts eases my stress and reduces anxiety, in addition to helping me plan and accomplish things in a productive manner.

  2. I have a hard time concentrating on myself as well. Focusing on others helped, and I was able to relieve some "ill feelings", that I apparently had stored away. I actually felt lighter and have since done this meditation a few times.

I wonder if mediatation is used in rehabilitation facilities. And if is it used what is the sucess rates? I would assume, that some it works for and others is just doesn't. For those it doen't work on, what do they do?
(maybe I should stop wating the investigation channel at night).

    Have a great day,
